Tempt us with tales of your favorite LT food!

I've started a blog entry a couple months ago about my favorite Lithuanian food known as saltibarsciai. But I was lying, because I have many more favorites! Such as the rich whole grain goodness of a dark, heavy loaf of Vilnius bread. Tell me, fellow members, what are YOUR favorites?!

Skanus, Antanas! I'm sure that dish would be even better with a large amount of sour cream. Thanks for your comment.

I have fond memories of my father (may he rest in peace) making kugelis when we were kids. It would take him a while because he grated the potatoes by hand. The aroma throughout the house was enough to drive you mad it smelled so
delicious. And we were told not to eat anything until it was ready. But what a treat when we finally sat down to eat. The
kugelis was moist and it had the consistency of pudding. Needless to say, there was never any left over. Kaip skanu !

The only other kugelis that rivals my fathers is Dalia's from the St. Casimirs parish. This lovely woman can cook lithuanian food like nobody's business.

As for me, I can make a pretty decent saltibarsciai. Nothing like a bowl of that on a hot LA summer day.

Oho! Skaaaanus! Thanks for shaing your memories and the link to recipes! In LT my friends make saltibarsciai with kefir and pickled beets, but my mother makes it with sour cream, vinegar and cooked beets. They have a cafeteria style restaurant called Pronto in Vilnius' Eurocentre shopping mall that always has a decent saltibarsciai with potatoes on the side (besides really good pastries that rival anything out of Paris.)
